Steve has been decommissioned since 2011 at some point.

Specification

  • Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
  • 512 MB RAM
  • Dual 100MB ethernet
  • Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 ('Wheezy')

Description

Steve was a tiny Dell Optiplex workstation found in a skip in 2010. It was used to provide certain essential network services to the Netsoc room, before the hosting of Quack in the maths department. It was only accessible by admins (in any case, it's was a crap machine, and non-admins would probably get bored of it very quickly).

Role

Steve acted as a transparent router for the room, because our wall ports were broken. It also ran a slave LDAP server at one point, allowing users to log into Spoon if Cube went down. This server was read-only - modifications to LDAP can only be done on Cube.

It was previously known as richard, and ran OpenBSD. It was renamed following the death of Steve Jobs in October 2011.

Security

Security is more important on steve than on other machines in the netsoc room, as it is quite easy to compromise other machines from an LDAP dump. SSH access was only available to admins. The entire machine was built on an encrypted LVM volume, allowing Malory to pull our hard disks without obtaining our data. Furthermore, GRUB on steve wass configured to refuse to boot without a firmware password (admins take note - if you reboot steve remotely, it *won't* come back up).
